Introduction to the SAVE FOR WEB Dialogue Box:

A quick, without too many details, introduction for saving your images for the web.

If you would like a more detailed walk through of this dialogue box see The Save For The Web Dialogue Box.

Before you begin ask yourself these three things:

  1. How big do you want the final image to be (physical dimensions)?
  2. How small do you want the final file size to be (around about how many kilobytes)?
  3. What do you want to name this file?

Now open your photograph in Photoshop. Go to the File menu and select Save For Web.

  1. Change the physical dimensions - To save for this website, for instance, make the longest side 500 pixels. To email you may want it smaller especially if you are sending several.
  2. Change the file size - Make sure you have JGEG selected, then choose how large you would the file to be; Low will give a small file size and poor quality, Maximum will give a larger file size and best quality.
  3. Naming and saving - Give the file a descriptive file name. The other important thing is the Format, make sure you have it set to Images Only because if it is set to HTML Only you get a little text file and nothing else.
