Depth of Field, Aperture, Circles of Confusion:

Check out your copy of John Greenwood's exposure articles. They contain some interesting information and experiences, these archived articles deal with technical issues:

Sharpening

Part One explains what sharpening is, why it is needed and how Unsharp Mask works.

Part Two goes into the general considerations of sharpening, the various Unsharp Mask settings and points to the problems of single pass sharpening.

Part Three looks at the Smart Sharpen tool in Photoshop CS2 and High Pass Sharpening.

Part Four is about LAB based sharpening and Layer Based / Luminosity mode sharpening.
