July 2010
You will notice from the list of Events that there is a field trip on 31st July. This links to the sports/action photography workshop on 27th July. This is your chance to put some theory into practice.
Here are the details:
Event: Hamilton City Cycling Club Handicap Race
Where: Kainui Tennis Club, Kainui Road, Horsham Downs. There will be competitors’ cars there so please respect that and park appropriately.
When: 31st July 2010. The race starts at 2pm and competitors will register from 1.30pm. If we meet at the tennis club at that time we can then split into groups to cover the prime locations to get some comprehensive coverage.
What: The race is 3 laps of an 11km circuit. The race route goes south from the tennis club, left into Lake Road, left into Dawson Road, left into Kerie Road (stiff climb, ouch!) and return to Kainui Road. The race is run as a handicap – slower riders off first, faster ones last. If the handicapper gets it right all should finish more or less together.
I’ll show some images from a recent race at the workshop and discuss some locations.
If we can pool some images after the event and send them for the Club website that would be good. We especially need good action shots of the juniors. Note that the younger juniors will probably only do 1 or 2 laps. As a member of Hamilton City Cycling Club we would really appreciate some good images.
And finally… check out www.grahamwatson.com. He is the master of cycling photography and his images are a great inspiration.
See you around.

PS: Sports and Action Photography on 27th July 2010: The aim of this session is to share ideas, tips and strategies for photographing sport or other action. This will not simply be about what camera settings to use but some of the items we will cover are:
- Why photograph sports?
- Composition
- Timing
|
- What makes a good sports photo?
- What makes a bad sports photo?
- Use of light
|
The key to taking a good sports photo is knowledge of the sport, the rules and its unique demands. If you have taken part in the sport you are photographing the inside knowledge you have will help you a lot. So if you do play or have played a sport competitively in the past, it would be great if you could share that knowledge with us.
To make it more fun, please wear an item of clothing or bring a piece of sports kit.
PPS: If you are a swimmer you don’t have to wear your Speedos!!! Cheers again, Geoff |
